All-Farm Towns
Fighting the good fight against polluting industries.
Fighting those polluting industries that pop up in your industrial zones, especially if you want those zones to be farms. Farm towns are a great no-pollution alternative to the standard city. However, getting it off the ground is a big problem. First off, zones must be large enough to accomodate farms. This means a minimal zone of 8x8 tiles. This section of zoning must be light industrial and a road must run on one or two sides of the zone. Of course you need power. Farms must be FAR AWAY from any big polluters. In your all-farm town, you should invest in quality solar power to deal with the pollution problem. A landfill should be placed in a remote corner away from the farms. Residential zones and commercial zones should be light. Medium density zones are acceptable if placed far from farms. Cluster residential and commercial zones together into a town. Farms (light industrial zones) will go on the outskirts. Be sure to dezone any excess land that don't become farms so that polluting industries dont sprout up. Be sure to enact the Farmer's Market ordinance. Also, do NOT enact ordinances that promote higher land value. One fact of life in a farm town is that land values must stay low for the farms to stay.
With the basic blueprint now in hand, your farm town can get off to a nice start. However, there is one great danger to farms, GROWTH. A delicate balance must be maintained when building farm towns. Growth must take place away from the farms with out making your Sims' commutes to your farm excessive. However, one day, the dreaded event will come. One or more of your farms is being taken over by polluting industries. It is these times that a true farm town is put to the test. The first action is to pause the game and find all farms affected. Then bulldoze all affected farms. Unpause the game and hope that the polluters wont be back. But if a farm is beyond saving, level it and dezone. Be prepared over the years to take out loans to fight polluters. The fight is very expensive but doable. These pointers will help you get off on the right foot.
