BK's Sim City 3000 HQ Strategy

Taking Out the Garbage

It's dirty. It smells. And you have to get rid of it.

A new feature in SimCity 3000 from its predecessors is the garbage disposal feature. For you as mayor, this creates a whole new set of problems to deal with. Do you just make a landfill for your garbage? Do you burn it at your newly built incinerator? Do you export it to your neighbor for them to dispose of it?

Your first answer may be to export it. You keep your hands clean and your city clean. However, you have to PAY your neighbors to take your garbage. This puts this option out of financial reach for all but the richest cites.

You could alternatively bury it in your local landfill. It's easy. Just zone a plot of land as landfill, run a road up to it, and you're set! However, none of your Sims want to live next door. It isn't a bottomless pit either. Though trash does decay SLOWLY, your city keeps pumping in more and more. And then, (gasp!) you need more landfill space! This is a deadly spiral you can enter as time goes on.

The last and final option is to burn your trash. Just build an incinerator and all your trash will float away with the winds. Unfortunately, your Sims don't like looking up into a black sky caused by your pollution spilling incinerator. The waste-to-energy incinerator is a nice little to improvement to your basic incinerator. It's more expensive, but it's a little cleaner and it makes some electricity for your energy-hungry Sims. Yet, that big black sky is still there...

My personal favorite is to burn the garbage. It's economical and easy. I know it pollutes, but it's no worse than your pollution spilling coal power plant down the street. When the technology comes, the waste-to-energy incinerator does help. Lower pollution is always something to fight for. However, don't burn all your garbage. The recycling center is any Mayor's dream-come-true. It reduces the amount of trash you have to get rid of. However, it doesn't get rid of all of it, just up to a set percentage. For the burners out there, make sure you have an emergency landfill on hand just in case garbage grows faster that your incinerators can burn it. When your city is rich and full of money, you can export some of it to reduce pollution in your city. I know it's expensive, but it's a small step to utopia.

However, the choice is up to you on what you do with your trash. But choose wisely.
